COVID-19 continues to spread across the state of South Carolina, making rapid identification of the infected as critical as ever. In order to stop the spread of the virus, rapid and reliable testing must be combined with social distancing, contact tracing, and isolation of the sick.

What is the difference between the three test types?

* Rapid Antigen Testing tests for an active COVID-19 infection for patients that have had possible exposure to the COVID-19 virus after 3- 5 days or if they are showing symptoms related to COVID-19. Results are ready in approximately 30 minutes.

* Traditional Lab Based Viral Testing (PCR)

The Standard (PCR) viral test uses a nasal/throat swab to detect a current infection of COVID-19 in your body. This test may be required before certain surgeries, returning to work, discontinuing self-isolation, and even traveling to certain countries. Results are ready in approximately 24 – 48 hours.

* Antibody testing detects COVID-19 antibodies in your blood stream produced by your immune system. If antibodies are present in your system it may indicate that you’ve had a COVID-19 infection in the past.
